Spring Fling

So here is one of the reasons I haven't done a post in a while. You see, we've been having such a good run of surf I treated myself to a new board. It started out so innocently but things have gotten pretty serious and I've been spending a lot of overtime in the water with my new ride.

This board measures out at 6'0" x 14 1/2 x 20 1/8 x 14 3/4 by 2 1/2. I'm using the Future VF4 Quad Fins which really give the board a lot of drive and speed. With the rounded pin it's very smooth rail to rail and holds tight in the pocket. I'm pretty jazzed.

It's a bonus to the stoke factor when you find a faithful companion that will fly freely on the face of a wave and surprise and enlighten you on each go out.

Nice! and glad your getting waves. The board looks similar to the one you made me. I'm enjoying the rounded pin quad as well. Have not rode it much as a thruster yet.

Hi Ward - with maybe one or two exceptions (Moss, Ano), is there any tradeoff with going 20" and above in width in the waves we ride around the SC/bay area? I notice you're riding fuller-outline shapes and I remember liking all that curve from my 80s boards...

Thanks for all your comments, it's good to share the stoke.

Yes, I am riding fuller outline boards very similar to the curves and templates of the mid 80s. That was a very user friendly era in surfboard design, boards had plenty of float and worked well in a large range of surf. Going forward I have added a modern rocker profile, rail shape, and thickness foil. This makes the board more sensitive and not so clunky feeling. The big bonus is that I can ride shorter boards that turn quicker and feel better in the pocket.
So back to your question. I think if you can take your normal shortboard, drop the length by an inch or two and add 1/2" or so to the width, you will have a fast and skatey board that will most likely improve your performance on a wave. The trade off is less bog and more fun.

Is this what I saw you riding at micro-4Mile yesterday (with you boys I think)?

Ah, well I did have my boys out at an undisclosed surf spot just north of town the other day if that is what you mean. and yes I was riding my spring fling thing.
